Our process is led with ideas, not with execution, aesthetics, or trends. It changes, evolves, mutates – depending on circumstance.
All projects are different and bespoke, but this important step sets the creative path and dictates our direction – rather than restricting ourselves to a technique, or a step-by-step process. Without an idea, everything else is just window dressing.
At the heart of it, we understand that your end goal needs to be kept in mind throughout the entire process. At each step, we ask, ‘How is this going to help you lead the way against your competitors?’ After all, it takes more than just a pretty logo to set you apart.
Within the studio, we encourage experimentation of ideas with an emphasis on collaboration, differentiation, and authenticity. This enables innovation and diverse perspectives to solve a problem and to create brands with meaningful supporting ideas and concepts. By elevating your brand and giving your business soul, we immediately emphasise why your company does what it does.
More than just some pretty marks on a page or the latest design trend, a Design by Bird outcome is something strong and tangible which even penetrates into business culture and customer satisfaction. Going above and beyond the status quo, our work is always undertaken in a considered process-driven manner, enabling us to deliver meaningful outcomes of the highest quality.

We’re a small team of heavy lifters, overachievers, food lovers and film quoters.
Luke Carson
Creative Director
BA Graphic Design (Hons)Fact: Hates avocado and loves Josef Müller-Brockmann.
Darth Vader, minties and optical alignment — these are a few of his favourite things. He is a man of precision, pixel perfection and truly a leader in the craft. But he knows he is still a student, and often consults the greats, like Massimo Vignelli and Josef Müller-Brockmann. Captivated by Swiss design and the principals of modern typography. He has come directly from some of the best Melbourne design studios, and decided to go out on his own in 2011, when he and Clarrissa founded Design by Bird.
Diana Marcela
Designer
BA Comm. Design
GD in Art HistoryFact: Eats two cheese burgers
under 1m & 34secs.
Diana is publicly known as Dee with two ees. Whimsical, and full of wonder, she’s got a distinct perspective on the world and won’t take no for an answer. In a studio setting, she’s a designer through and through and looks to language rather than visuals for inspiration. That’s why you’ll find her listening to films over music — with Interstellar and the entire six seasons of Mad Men being the catalysts to many of her brilliant ideas. She wants every brand she works on to be embraced wholeheartedly and commits herself to making this possible for every client.
Bianca Johnston
Business Manager
BA Arts/Primary TeachingFact: Colour codes work desk, wardrobe, work folders.
Dislikes: feta cheese.
If you were to look at the list of industries Bianca has worked in, you’d think we were talking about multiple people rather than one young mum from the Mornington Peninsula. From tourism to marketing, hospitality to event management, she’s found a home at Design by Bird. Channelling her knowledge, she handles the numbers, structure and general order of business, including herding cats aka creative folk. She’s a numbers gal — and brings an obsessive need to colour code everything that makes her very easy to find.
Rachel Doyle
Marketing Manager
BA Literature/History (Hons)
MA (Communications)Fact: Sailed from Columbia to Panama with a pirate look-a-like and her best friend (aka husband).
Dislikes: Peas
Rachel is the new kid on the block for the Design by Bird team. Rachel lives and breathes brand storytelling- loves getting under the skin of what makes a brand hum. Carving out a thirteen-year career in both local and international markets as both a brand marketer and copywriter, she is the queen of multi-tasking (she needs to be as a mother of two little munchkins). She has been fortunate to play with some of the biggest brands, some just beginning and a few in-between. Working in health and wellness, retail, fashion and beauty, tourism and the arts – she loves a creative challenge. Addicted to grandpa hats, galleries, abstract art and the delicious words of Tim Winton, she now dances to Wiggles more than she would like to admit. Twist her arm to sum up her marketing mantra and she would say ‘Make it sing. Be sincere.’
Clarrissa Carson
Director
BA Business ManagementFact: Loves avocado and doesn’t know who Josef Müller-Brockmann is.
Clarrissa, a name that is often misspelt, even by her father. She’s half of the whole that founded Design by Bird, and has enjoyed the challenge of owning her own business ever since. She ‘thinks big’ when it comes to business, taking cues from her recently completed BA of Business Management but knows life outside of work is more important. She’s not a designer, but brings her roll up your sleeves attitude into the everyday life of the studio. She’s a book of knowledge, but hates acronyms. She’ll also out run you, even in kitten heels. She’s got an ironman to prove it.
